DXF and SVG are both vector file formats, but they were built for different ecosystems. For CNC cutting, neither format is automatically better in every situation. The safer choice is the format your CAD or CAM software imports most reliably while preserving the intended dimensions and closed cutting geometry.

Which Format Is Better for CNC Plasma Cutting?

DXF is commonly the safer starting point for CNC plasma cutting because many plasma CAM programs are built around CAD-style 2D geometry. However, that is not universal. If your plasma software officially supports SVG and imports it at the correct size with clean closed paths, SVG can also work.

Before nesting or generating G-code, check scale, open contours, duplicate lines, very small features, kerf allowance, lead-ins, and the minimum feature size your plasma setup can cut reliably. A file format cannot make geometry suitable for a particular torch, material, or thickness.

Which Format Is Better for Laser Cutting?

Laser workflows vary widely. Graphics-oriented laser software often handles SVG well because SVG retains vector paths and is easy to preview or edit. CAD-oriented laser CAM may prefer DXF.

For either format, make sure text has been converted to paths when required, cut lines are not duplicated, decorative strokes are not mistaken for multiple cut paths, and the imported dimensions match the design.

For two-dimensional profile, pocket, drilling-layout, or engraving geometry, either DXF or SVG may be usable if your router CAM software imports it correctly. DXF is often more natural in CAD-driven workflows, while SVG can be convenient for signs and decorative vector work.

DXF and SVG files are not finished toolpaths. They do not choose your cutter, feeds, speeds, cut depth, tabs, step-down, or workholding. They are also not substitutes for a three-dimensional model when the project requires 3D relief machining or complex surfaces.

Common Problems to Check After Import

  1. Wrong physical size: Measure a known dimension immediately after import.
  2. Open contours: Join endpoints before creating inside or outside profile toolpaths.
  3. Duplicate geometry: Remove overlapping lines that could cause a machine to cut the same path twice.
  4. Text or strokes: Convert unsupported text and graphic effects to ordinary vector paths.
  5. Small features: Compare slots, holes, bridges, and decorative details with your tool or kerf width.
